Description
Fresh figs (Ficus carica) are soft, delicate fruits with thin edible skins, tender flesh, and numerous tiny edible seeds. Varieties range from dark purple and black to green, golden, and striped, with flavors spanning deep and jammy to honey-like, berry-like, and lightly citrusy. Fresh figs provide fiber and potassium along with polyphenols such as anthocyanins, rutin, chlorogenic acid, and other flavonoids and phenolic acids. Their short season and delicate texture make them especially enjoyable fresh, but they can also be roasted, grilled, baked, added to salads, or paired with cheese, nuts, herbs, and savory foods.
